Healthy Enrollment for Class of 06
This years new freshman class is about the same size as last years record-breaker, with 843 enrolled this year as opposed to 845 last year. This years class has 23 percent more African American students than last year while Hispanic students are up 15 percent. The number of new international freshmen is down 20 percent although the number of international transfers is even with last year.
We are beginning the 2002-03 academic year with healthy enrollment in almost all our schools and colleges, said B.J. Johnson, dean of academic services. Both new and continuing student enrollment for traditional undergraduate students will exceed projections.
Suzette DeGrange, senior associate director of multicultural recruitment and retention, said she is very pleased with the higher numbers, a result of her office's expanded efforts to recruit at schools serving underrepresented populations. With the help of USF students, we were able to provide individual attention to students throughout the admissions process," DeGrange said. The sense of community we've been able to develop through campus visits and overnight programs has helped students and their parents see themselves as part of the USF family.
In overall new undergraduate enrollment, USF exceeded its projections for the year by 2 percent, with 1,200 students starting or transferring to USF this fall. Their measured academic performance is as high as last year's average with a 3.4 GPA and 11,000 combined score on the SAT.
