Learning Around the World
Besides the trip to South Africa (see story Witnessing the New South Africa), USF schools and colleges are sponsoring more than a dozen international programs this summer:
College of Arts and Sciences
Professor Julio Moreno will take 15 students to Tijuana, Mexico as part of a course titled Border Issues. Students will learn about immigration, security, and trade at the Jesuit Universidad Iberoamericana. As part of a dual degree program with the School of Education, 10 students will spend a month at the Jesuit university in Tijuana, where they will observe teaching techniques in a variety of schools and also learn about border issues. Students in both Tijuana programs will work with local shelters as part of their service learning commitment. Professor Lois Lorentzen is taking 14 students to the Jesuit university in San Salvador, El Salvador to study the democratization of the country and related socio-economic changes. Students will travel and work with Habitat for Humanity. Approximately 12 students will spend six weeks at the Jesuit university in Manila studying Philippine society, politics, and economics, and experiencing the effects of democratization and economic globalization. They will work with Musmos (a rehabilitation program for street children) and with Habitat for Humanity. In addition, six students in the dual degree in teacher preparation program will spend a month at the Ateneo de Manila University observing schools and learning about Filipino culture.
School of Business and Management
In July, Professor Salvador Aceves and 12 students in the Executive MBA program will spend a week in Prague and Frankfurt, Germany, where they will meet with business and economic leaders.
School of Law
Five students, led by Professor Jack Garvey, will work on intellectual property issues with the attorney generals office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Several faculty members, including DeDe Donovan, will work at the Institute for Trade and Politics in Shanghai, China. The Center for Law and Global Justice is sponsoring three programs: Led by Professor Judd Iversen, a group of law school professors, alumni, and students will present an administrative law seminar at Ho Chi Minh University of Law in Vietnam in July; Adjunct professor Arman Rosencranz and nine law students will attend and assist with an environmental law seminar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from July 2 through Aug. 9; Iversen and seven students will work with the University of Central America and its Institute of Human Rights in San Salvador from June 15 through July 30. USF law students are also in Dublin and Prague this summer for university exchange programs.
School of Nursing
Professor Linda Walsh, Dean John Lantz, and seven nursing students will spend two weeks in May and June in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, as part of a Global Issues and Community Health class, in which students will work with midwives in the village.
