Paul Warren, Dean of School of Education, to Step Down in July
After 40 years in higher education, 13 of them spent at the University of San Francisco, Paul Warren, dean of the School of Education, announced his resignation as dean March 22.
Its been most rewarding and challenging to be part of USF, Warren said. Im particularly proud of our work in the community. USF takes that concept the most seriously of any university where Ive worked.
Warren worked as a teaching fellow and instructor at New York University and as a dean and professor at Boston University before coming to USF in 1989. He received his doctorate in education from NYU in 1968.
Warren, 64, said he decided to step down from his position as dean because he is interested in taking his life in a more creative direction. He is planning or has already begun to write three books, including an examination of popular cultural influences on youth. He will continue to work at USF next year on administrative projects related to urban education and grant proposals, he said.
In looking back at my career, I made one mistake in my professional life, he said. I made the transition from teaching to administration too early in my career. I dont want to leave administration too late.
His most satisfying accomplishments at USF are creating the dual degree program in conjunction with the College of Arts and Sciences, starting the Institute for Social Justice and recruiting Herb Kohl as its director, and promoting a social justice focus at the school, he said.
