Mary Abascal-Hildebrand, Professor–Anthropology, was elected to the board of directors of the St. Francis Foundation-Kiwanis International in October 2001.



Richard D. Babcock, Professor–School of Business and Management, and Bertha Du-Babcock, former adjunct professor, were presented the Outstanding Article in the Business Communication Award at the Association for Business Communication Annual Convention in San Diego in November 2001 for their article, “Adapting an American-Based Simulation to a Hong Kong Classroom” published in Communication Quarterly in 2000.



BuckleyFrancis J. Buckley, S.J., Professor–Theology and Religious Studies, is revising the forthcoming national directory for Catechesis. He attended the East Coast Religious Education Congress last month in Washington, D.C. His article, “Teaching about Terrorism and War,” appeared in the February issue of Connexions.



John Callaway, Professor–Environmental Science, is the new editor of Madrono, the journal of the California Botanical Society. He also published a paper, “Declining Biodiversity: Why Species Matter and How Their Functions Might be Restored in Californian Tidal Marshes,” in the December issue of BioScience.



ClausenJune Madsen Clausen, Associate Professor–Psychology, was recently awarded $124,000 from the Silicon Valley Children’s Fund for her project “Pathways Through the Children’s Shelter of Santa Clara County.”



Jane Vincent Corbett, Professor–Nursing, presented a seminar titled “Nursing Implications of Laboratory Tests” at UCSF in January.



Brian Komei Dempster, Lecturer–Expository Writing, published poems in the recent issues of Gulf Coast and Quarterly West. In February he gave a presentation of “From Our Side of the Fence: Growing Up in America’s Concentration Camps” at Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum.



Raymond Dennehy, Professor–Philosophy, addressed the Seniors Club in Kentfield in February on physician-assisted suicide and “end of life” decisions.



EliasRob Elias, Professor–Politics, had his book, Baseball and the American Dream: Race, Class, Gender & the National Pastime nominated in December for the annual Sporting News Book Award.



Andrew Heinze, Associate Professor–History, will deliver the Maurice Friedman Lecture on Modern Jewish Thought at San Diego State University on March 13.



William Karney, Assistant Professor–Chemistry, co-authored a paper, “Möbius Aromatic Forms of 8-Electron Heteropines,” to be published in the journal Perkin Transactions 2 in March.



Luigi Lucaccini, Research Associate and Internship Coordinator–Family Business Resource Center, and Eugene Muscat, Associate Dean–Business and Management, had their article “Family Business and Careers: Classic and Contemporary Issues” published in the Career Planning and Adult Development Journal in August 2001.

Susan Paik, Assistant Professor–Education, published her article “Timely Improvements to Learning” in the January issue of Educational Horizons. She was also invited to Washington, D.C. and awarded a National Science Foundation grant in October. In December, she was invited to Taiwan National University to present a paper. She will also be attending the American Education Research Association conference in New Orleans in April.



Terence Patterson, Associate Professor–Education, is the editor of Volume II, “Cognitive Behavioral Approaches,” in the four-volume Comprehensive Handbook of Psychotherapy to be published in April. Patterson is also co-author of the Volume II chapter “Ethical Issues in Behavior Therapy.”



Maurice Penner, Professor–CPS, co-authored the article “Reimbursement for Complimentary/Alternative Medicine by California HMOs” which was published in Managed Care Quarterly in December 2001.



Ray Quirolgico, Associate Director–Residence Life, will be a presenter in the program, “Stories of Moral Wisdom,” with Julie Orio, Hall Director–Residence Life, Rosemary Perez, Hall Director–Residence Life, and Erin Gannon, Assistant Hall Director–Residence Life, at the annual convention of the American College Personnel Association in Long Beach, Mar. 16-20. Quirolgico is also the coordinating presenter in two other programs at the same convention: “Voices, Myths and Heresies in Our Professional Practice” and “How Mentors Can Evoke Moral and Spiritual Stories from Students.” He is a panelist and co-presenter of a workshop, “Ecology, Elements, and Evolution: The Healthy Campus,” at the annual convention of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in Boston, Mass., Mar. 2-6. He was also awarded a continuing grant in January from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to work with the AAC&U program Leadership Node Partners.



Daniel Rascher, Assistant Professor–Sports and Fitness Management, had his paper “Competitive Balance on the Field and in the Courts” accepted in February for publication in For the Record.



RaeburnNicole Raeburn, Assistant Professor-Sociology, was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle on March 4 in a story about the opening of the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center.



Paolo F. Ricci, Professor–Environmental Science, has been invited to lecture in February and March on risk assessment and management applied to air pollution events by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization.



David Stump, Associate Professor–Philosophy, published a paper, “From the Values of Scientific Philosophy to Value Neutral Philosophy of Science,” in the March issue of History of Philosophy of Science: New Trends and Perspectives.



SullivanJohn T. Sullivan, Professor–Biology, co-authored a paper, “Survival of Heterotopic Heart Xenografts from Helisoma duryi, Planorbula armigera, and Planorbaius corneus in Biomphalaria glabrata (Pulmonata, Basommatophora, Planorbidae): Evidence for Phylogenetic Relatedness?” published in the February issue of Invertebrate Biology.



Lisa Yimm, Program Director–KUSF, is featured this month in the “Women in Careers” section of the Web site www.girlstart.com. Her interview appears in the section “Check Her Out.”
