USF to Offer Environmental Management Degree in Thailand

As part of a continuing effort to expand its environmental studies program around the globe, the University of San Francisco will open a new environmental management master’s degree program in Bangkok, Thailand next summer. The program will be offered by USF and its partner, Mahidol University in Bangkok, with both schools supplying half the faculty needed. All classes will be offered at Mahidol.

“The aim of programs like this is to create a global alliance of universities teaching environmental management,” said Stanley Nel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. USF currently offers a similar program at Péter Pázmány Catholic University in Budapest and is negotiating with Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines to start another environmental management master’s program there.

During a week-long trip to Asia earlier this month, USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J. signed an agreement finalizing the program (seen in photo with Pornchia Matangkasombut, president of Mahidol University). Nel said he has promoted the program with Thai companies and has received promises from some to enroll their employees and provide financial support. The course is designed to further educate people in government and private industry who are responsible for drafting and enforcing environmental regulations.end
