USF Tops in Diversity, International Flair
For the second year in a row, the University of San Francisco ranked among the top 20 most diverse U.S. universities on this years U.S. News & World Report rankings of American colleges and universities. USF also scored within the top eight percent of schools with the largest international student populations.
More than 50 percent of this years freshman class are students of color, topping the previous years high of 47 percent.
One of the advantages at USF is the range of perspectives that our diverse student body brings to our community, said James Wiser, provost and vice president for academic affairs. It is a quality that we seek and it is something about which we are very proud.Also for the second year in a row, USF ranked overall in the second tier of national universities. The report, which appeared in the Sept. 10 issue, grades universities and colleges according to their overall score on a number of academic- and support-related categories. Academic reputation as well as graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, and percent of classes with less than 20 students are surveyed. The report does not numerically rank schools in the second tier, which includes numbers 53 through 130.
President to Deliver Fall Convocation to Faculty at Gershwin Theater
USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J., will deliver the fall convocation to faculty on Sept. 25. The convocation will be at 3 p.m. in the Ira and Leonore S. Gershwin Theater. For information, call (415) 422-6921.
Archbishop is Among Speakers in New SII Lecture Series
San Francisco Archbishop William Levada will be among the speakers in a new lecture series at the University of San Francisco's St. Ignatius Institute. Levada was to inaugurate the lectures on Sept. 11, but his talk was postponed after that days terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. Levadas lecture will be rescheduled for a later date.
The first speaker in the series will now be Peter Steinfels of The New York Times, who is one of the top religion reporters in the country. Steinfels will speak at 4 p.m. Oct. 11 in McLaren Center, room 250.
The purpose of the lecture series is to further the dialogue between faith and culture, said Paul Murphy, SII director. The lectures are co-sponsored by the SII and the University of San Francisco Catholic Studies Program.
New BART Shuttle Begins Service to USF Campus Mon-Fri
The University of San Francisco now offers shuttle service between the Civic Center BART station and the campus for faculty and staff. Pick-up and drop-off at the BART station is on the corner of 8th and Market streets. At the university, the shuttle stops on Fulton Street in front of St. Ignatius Church.
The shuttle operates every half-hour from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. A $1 fee is charged to subsidize the cost of the shuttle. Books of 10 tickets may be purchased at the Department of Public Safety. For more information, contact Public Safety at wight@usfca.edu.
Golf, Aloha Style, to be Featured in SOBAM Fundraiser
Golf, via Hawaii, will be the theme of the 12th annual executive golf tournament sponsored by the University of San Francisco School of Business and Management. The tournament, which will feature prizes, a raffle drawing, and a best/worst Hawaiian shirt contest, is managed by the schools events management class as a semester project to learn the logistics of event planning.
Participants will be treated to a gourmet box lunch and a catered dinner in addition to a round of golf at the Crystal Springs Golf Course in Burlingame. The tournament is open to the public. Proceeds from the event will help fund the schools scholarship fund. For information, call (415) 422-2581.
Judaic Studies Program Plans Annual Fall Lecture Series
James Carroll, the best-selling author of Constantines Sword: The Church and the Jews, will be featured as part of the Swig Judaic Studies Program fall lecture series. Carroll will appear Oct. 18 to discuss Anti-Semitism and the Church: A Scandal for Christians, a Dilemma for Jews.
Also appearing in the fall lecture series is Zvi Gitelman of the University of Michigan. Gitelmans Dec. 5 lecture will be titled Reconstructing Jewish Life and Identities in the Former Soviet Union. City, Business Leaders to Participate in Luncheon Series
The University of San Francisco MBA Alumni Society is sponsoring a monthly luncheon series this semester with lectures on office real estate in San Francisco, The Citys political and economic climate, and an insiders view of business reporting. Featured speakers will be Bill Cumbelich, a principal with The CAC Group, San Francisco Supervisor Gavin Newsom, and KGO business reporter Lynn Jimenez.
The Financial District Monthly Luncheon Series aims to give the USF community a chance to hear a range of perspectives on Bay Area business. Faculty are invited to bring students. The series will be held in the Carnelian Room, on the top floor of the Bank of America Center. The cost is $30 per person, with lunch included.
