Two Dons Baseball Players Drafted by Giants, Padres
USF junior right-handed pitcher Jesse Foppert was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft in June. As the 74th pick in the 2001 draft, Foppert became the highest pitcher ever selected from USF.
Foppert made a powerful impact for the Dons this season, which was his first year of pitching at the collegiate level. Foppert struck out 112 batters during the season and issued just 38 walks. His eight victories and 112 strike outs ranked second on the USF single-season record books.
Also drafted was senior three-time All-American Taggert Bozied. He was drafted for the third and final time by the San Diego Padres with the 90th overall selection in the third round of the draft. Bozied is the career leader in virtually every major USF offensive category.
For USF, 2001 marks the first time in program history that two players have been drafted in the top three rounds of the major league baseball draft and adds to a recent wealth of Don draft picks. Last season, four USF players were drafted and five players signed professional contracts.
