More Than 1,500 Students Will Become Alumni May 17 to 20
More than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students will don caps and gowns for the commencement exercises in St. Ignatius Church May 17 to 20. The following is a list of the approximate number of candidates for graduation, divided by college and schools:
College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduates, 342; College of Arts and Sciences Graduates, 94; School of Business and Management Undergraduate, 175; School of Business and Management Graduate, 175; School of Education Graduate, 193; School of Law J.D., 193; School of Law L.M. 22; School of Nursing Undergraduate, 40; School of Nursing Graduate, 6; College of Professional Studies Undergraduate, 215; College of Professional Studies Graduate, 100.
ASUSF Elects New Officers, Approves MUNI Initiative
The Associated Students of the University of San Francisco held its general elections for the student senate in April. Sophomore civics and politics major Carlos Menchaca was elected president, defeating incumbent Holly Hogan. Menchaca previously served as the vice president of internal affairs. He said he hopes to bring colorful ideas to campus that fulfill the Jesuit mission of educating for a just society.
Frangelo Ayran, a senior biology and philosophy major, is the new vice president of internal affairs. Junior politics and history major Joseph Macias was re-elected vice president of business administration. Sophomore communications major Sunny Angulo was elected vice president of public relations. Other new officers are Jessica Gunderson and Kimberly Murphy, sophomore class representatives, Soroya Sheida and Ana Lilia Barajas, students of color representatives, Charlene Ang and Frederick Jacobs, international students representatives, Michelle Koga, non-traditional age student representative, and Charles Cadiz, off-campus representative.
Students also voted on the MUNI class pass initiative, which adds a fee for a reduced public transportation pass to all undergraduates tuition. Seventy-one percent of those who voted approved the intiative.
Student Graphics Center Wins Several Professional Awards
At the recent convention of the Association of College Unions-International (ACUI) in Toronto, Canada, the USF student Graphics Center won awards in the following categories of the annual ACUI Graphics Competition: 1st place in four-color brochure (for the Graphics Center marketing brochure); 1st place for T-shirt design (for Orientation 2000); 2nd place for two-color poster (for Homecoming 2000); honorable mention for Web design (for the Graphics Center home page).
The USF Graphics Center was recognized at this professional association conference with colleges and universities representing all 50 states, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain.
Business School Receives $425,000 Federal Grant
The School of Business and Management has received a three-year grant totaling $425,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the New Venture Center and the Family Business Resource Center. The money will help pay for both centers staff support, library collections, databases, technology support, faculty research, and travel support, among other services.
Gleeson Library Will Close on Sundays During Summer
For the past few summers, Sunday patronage in the Gleeson Library has been minimal, library officials said. This summer, on a trial basis, the library will be closed Sundays, from May 19 through Aug. 12. The library will be open Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for convocation guests. Schools of Law and Business Successfully Reaccredited
The School of Business and Management and the School of Law were recently visited by teams representing their respected accrediting bodies. The International Association for Management in Education has officially reaccredited the School of Business and Management. The school must be reaccredited every 10 years.
A reaccrediting team from the American Bar Association visited the School of Law in March, and Dean Jeff Brand said he expects an official letter confirming the schools reaccredidation within the next several weeks. The review team remarked very favorably about the quality of the school, the dedication of faculty, and the thoroughness of the schools preparation for the review, Brand said.
Members of Media Industry Meet With USF Students
The Priscilla A. Scotlan Career Services Center and Lambda Pi Eta, USFs branch of the national honor society for communications, hosted a multi-media panel discussion April 25. Panelists were Adrianne Cabanatuan, recruitment manager for the San Francisco Chronicle, Sile Kearney, staffing manager for Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide/SF, Danny Placzkowski, general manager of Hotbed Media, Raul Ramirez, news and public affairs director for KQED 88.5 FM, and Ginny Yamate, director of public affairs for KGO-TV.
Panelists shared with students and faculty stories about their lives in media. They also gave students pointers on how to break into the business, including information about internships and job opportunities. Alumnus Stan Sims (MBA 97), major account manager at Allegiance Telecom, Inc., moderated the discussion. The career services center will continue to partner with student groups to host events that will introduce the business community to USF students. CPS Professor in the Himalayas
College of Professional Studies adjunct professor David Komito is bringing new meaning to the term distance education. Komito is teaching his online Tibetan Buddhism course from the cybercafe of a hotel in the Tibetan community of Dharamsala in the western Himalayas. One of Komitos students is taking the course from Saudi Arabia, where she recently relocated.
Thacher Gallery Hosts Annual Student Art Exhibition
Works of art created by students of the USF department of fine and performing arts are being showcased at the Thacher Gallery as part of Resonance, the second annual USF bachelor of fine arts juried exhibition.
The exhibition brings together representative works by the fine and performing arts departments joint degree program with the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) and the cooperative program with the Academy of Art. Works include painting, drawing, illustration, fashion design, graphic design, interior architecture, industrial design, and architecture.
Outreach Ministry Brings Together Community and Campus
On April 28, Outreach Ministry celebrated its 14th annual Spring Day of Play on Negoesco Field. The ministry, faculty, friends, and students organized and participated in the event that was the culmination of Outreach Ministrys year of serving the youth and needy of San Francisco.
Approximately 400 children from local parishes, schools, homeless shelters, and religious education programs participated in the event. In addition, more than 200 USF students and 28 USF clubs and organizations joined the celebration. Children played games on the field, and the USF clubs set up tables for activities such as face-painting or necklace-making. A host of contributors helped make the event possible, including Fedele Bauccio, founder and president of Bon Appetit restaurant which provided lunch for the event. Other significant contributors were Michael McKenzie, chef at Loyola House, Brent Lau, general manager of KDNZ, which provided music and tech support, and Chuck White, director of Koret Health and Recreation Center.
Distinguished Latin American Poet Visits USF
Celebrated Latin American poet Fr. Ernesto Cardenal (seen at left) spoke at USF in April during a visit promoting his new book, Cosmic Canticle. Fr. Cardenal, considered by many to be the greatest living poet of Latin America, is the director of Casa de los Tres Mundos, a cultural organization in Nicaragua. The 76-year-old priest has been fighting for social justice in Nicaragua for decades and is among the most important political and social activists in Latin America.
Spring Business Plan Competition Was
Most Competitive and Best Attended Yet
The USF New Venture Center and the USF Entrepreneur Club held the Spring Business Plan Competition April 27 in Xavier Hall, with more than 120 people in attendance. Six finalist teams presented business plans to a panel of professional investor judges. Student teams members represented the USF Executive MBA, MBA, and undergraduate business programs. Stanford University was also represented by two PhD engineers as part of a combined USF/Stanford team.
In what proved to be an extremely tight finish, Tyler Bennetts plan for NetMedical an on-line medical management and billing softwaretook first place and the $1,000 award. The leading undergraduate team Fernando Gomez, Abdullah Al-Mutawa, and Elaine Sullivan of Compu-Menu, a computerized restaurant menu hardware and software solution took home the Fallatah 2001 undergraduate prize of $500. Additional prizes from Sony Corporation and Palo Alto Software were awarded to other finalists.
