Board of Trustees Elects Six New Members


A Silicon Valley business leader and an international authority on HIV/AIDS are among six new members of the USF Board of Trustees. At its March 23 meeting, the board elected Jon D. Fuller, S.J., Patrick B. O’Leary, S.J., Alfred S. Chuang, Dr. Lawrence R. O’Connor, Steven P. Westley, and Alfonso T. Yuchengco to the board.

Fr. Fuller is an associate professor of medicine at Boston University and an international authority on the clinical treatment of HIV/AIDS. He has written more than 100 published articles, five books and four book chapters. Fr. Fuller brings to the board an expertise in medicine, medical ethics, and Catholic responses to world-relief issues.

Fr. O’Leary is assistant to the president for mission and identity and the faculty-staff chaplain at Seattle University. His previous positions include professor of theology and rector of the Jesuit Community. He earned his doctorate in theology at Gregorian University. Fr. O’Leary brings to the board a rich background in pastoral ministry, spiritual formation, and Catholic higher education.

Chuang is co-founder and chief operating officer of BEA Systems, a company that he has helped to build into one of the world’s leading e-business infrastructure software companies. Chuang is an international authority on relational database development. He received his BS in computer science at USF in 1982. As a trustee, he will help build USF’s network of contacts in Silicon Valley, provide guidance on upgrading university technology, assist in the expansion of the computer science department, and help build links between the USF and Bay Area Asian-American communities.

Dr. O’Connor, a USF alum and the father of a current USF student, is director of the Cardiac Fitness Center and Prevention Services of Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center. He founded three cardiovascular professional associations, invented the CO-set and Sonic Balloon for use in cardiac treatment and has published five scholarly articles. He will help USF build links to the medical community and provide leadership among Southern California alumni and friends.

Until recently, Westley served as senior vice president of eBay Incorporated, one of the world’s largest internet companies. He established partnerships for eBay with more than 300 internet corporations. He is active in civic affairs and served in leadership positions of the Democratic National Committee and the California Democratic Party. Having served on the McLaren Advisory Council since 1989, Westley brings to the board expertise in technology businesses, an understanding of national affairs and an extensive network of business and civic contacts.

Yuchengco is an international banker, industrialist, insurance executive, and diplomat. He served his native Philippines as ambassador to Japan and China. He has served as chairman of the board to many corporations, including Rizal Commercial Bank, Pan Malayan Management and Investment and Philippine Fuji Xerox Corporation. He established study centers at De la Salle University in Manila and at USF. He is the father of the late USF alumnus Maria Elena Yuchengco. He brings to the board global business contacts, a commitment to advancing Asian studies, and business acumen.end
