Tim Russert to Speak at May Commencement


Tim Russert of NBC News is among several speakers scheduled to address USF graduates and receive honorary degrees during the university’s spring commencement ceremonies in St. Ignatius Church in May.

Tim Russert will deliver the commencement address to the undergraduates of the College of Arts and Sciences at 3 p.m. May 18. Russert is the moderator of the popular Sunday morning program, “Meet the Press.”

Most Rev. Macram Max Gassis, Bishop of the Diocese of El Obeid, Sudan, will address the graduate students of the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business and Management at noon May 18. Bishop Gassis is a legendary human rights figure in Sudan and internationally.

Cloe Madanes, an internationally known psychotherapist, will deliver the commencement address for the School of Education at 6 p.m. May 18. Madanes co-founded the Family Therapy Institute in Washington, D.C.

California Attorney General Bill Lockyer will deliver the commencement address to students of the College of Professional Studies at 9 a.m. May 19.

Brig. Gen. William T. Bester will deliver the commencement address to the graduates of the School of Nursing at noon May 19. Bester is the assistant surgeon general and deputy chief of staff for Force Projection and the 21st Chief of Army Nurse Corps.

Sister Patrick Curran, R.S.M., will receive an honorary Doctorate for her outstanding service to the Church, during the School of Nursing ceremony. In 1998, Sister Curran became the fourth executive director of the St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco.

Fred Korematsu will receive an honorary Doctorate during the School of Law commencement. Korematsu became famous for his rejection of Executive Order 9066, a presidential order that forced 120,000 Japanese-Americans to relocate to internment camps during World War II. Korematsu ran away from his hometown of Oakland, but was caught and arrested. In 1983, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed his prior conviction for refusing to obey the presidential order.

A speaker for the School of Business and Management undergraduate commencement, scheduled for 9 a.m. May 18, has not been determined. end
