Francis J. Buckley, S.J., professor–theology and religious studies, gave an address, “New Technology: Impact on Philosophy of Education,” at the annual convention of the Far West Philosophy of Education Society convention held at USF in February.


Donal Godfrey, S.J., resident minister–phelan hall, office of residence life, was interviewed about his research on the evolution of Most Holy Redeemer Parish in San Francisco on a recent BBC Radio broadcast. His topic is part of his doctorate in ministry at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.


MadrizEsther Madriz, associate professor–sociology, will present her work on “Fear of Crime Among Women” at the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University on March 23. On March 29, she will participate in a panel discussion, “Gender, Age, and the Law,” at the Pacific Sociological Association in San Francisco.


J. Thomas McCarthy, professor–school of law, read his paper titled “Legal Protection of an Athlete’s Persona” to a joint session of the Sports Law and Intellectual Property Sections of the Association of American Law Schools at its annual convention. The paper will be published in the Marquette Sports Law Journal.


Julio Moreno, assistant professor–history, served as a political commentator on the significance of the meeting between Mexican President Vicente Fox and U.S. President George W. Bush. The topics focused on the commercial, political, and diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States. The interview and analysis aired on KPIX-TV and the Spanish television stations Telemundo and Univision.


Lester A. Myers, assistant professor–school of business and management, delivered the paper, “At Our Professional Best: A Matrix Model of Accountability for Moral Lives in Professional Communities,” at the conference, “At Our Best: Moral Lives in a Moral Community,” in February. The conference was held at Santa Clara University in celebration of the sesquicentennial anniversary of its founding.


Vijaya R. Nagarajan, assistant professor–theology and religious studies, had an essay titled, “Rituals of Embedded Ecologies: Drawing Kolams, Marrying Trees, and Generating Auspiciousness,” published in the October 2000 issue of Hinduism and Ecology, (Harvard University Press and Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard). She also gave a public reading from the volume at Black Oak Books in February. Additionally, she has been selected as a research associate and visiting fellow at the Women’s Studies in Religion Program, a residential writing program at the Harvard Divinity School. She will be in residence there during the 2001-2002 academic year.


Chris Paterson, assistant professor–media studies, contributed a chapter to a new book addressing the relationship between news and globalization. “News in a Globalized Society” was published this winter by Nordicom in Sweden. Nordicom is the Nordic Information Center for Media and Communication Research.


Ray P. R. Quirolgico, associate director of staff and programs–office of residence life, was the coordinating presenter for “Overcoming Fear: Opening the Dialogue on Religion in the Academy,” a program sponsored by The American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs for its 2001 annual convention held in March in Boston. He also coordinated “Leading With Moral Courage,” a pre-conference workshop, for the ACPA. Additionally, Quirolgico proposed and received a grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities to coordinate a conference titled, “Learning for Our Common Health.” The conference will address the issue of integrating HIV/AIDS issues into various academic disciplines. It will be held in San Francisco.

Raymond Rogers, student loan coordinator–office of the bursar, has been named Institutional Member of the Year for 2001 by the Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations (COHEAO) in recognition of his involvement and dedication to the projects, mission, and membership of COHEAO. Rogers serves as co-chair of COHEAO’s Perkins Loan Task Force Committee.


Shalendra D. Sharma, associate professor–politics, was selected as a judge for non-fiction for the annual Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize. He also had his article, “Capital Flows and Financial Contagion: Why China and India Withstood the Crisis,” accepted for publication in the Chulalongkorn Journal of Economics. The journal is published bi-annually by the Department of Economics at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. This summer, Sharma will be part of an international team led by the International Monetary Fund assessing financial and corporate sector reforms in Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea.


Colin Silverthorne, professor–psychology, had his paper “Feedback Behaviour in Organizations” accepted for presentation at the Western Psychological Association Convention in May.


Victoria Siu, lecturer–history, had her proposal accepted by the selection committee for the First International Symposium on Chinese Gardens, co-sponsored by the Asia Society, Columbia University and the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden of Staten Island. She will deliver an illustrated presentation on a sector of the imperial garden, the Yuanming Yuan, on Sept. 15 at Columbia University.


Michael Stanfield, coordinator–center for latino studies in the americas and associate professor-history, accepted an invitation to participate in a March teach-in at the University of California, Santa Cruz, titled, “Colombia: A Country in Conflict.” He also invited Phillip Chicola, U.S. State Department spokesperson, and Natalia López of the Colombian human rights group CHIBCHA, to join him at two presentations about U.S. military aid to Colombia. The first presentation was held at the World Affairs Council. The second, held at USF in March, was titled, “Drugs, Guerrillas, and Uncle Sam: The Impact of U.S. Military Aid in Colombia.”


Bruce Wydick, assistant professor–economics, recently had an article accepted (with Michael Kevane of Santa Clara University) for the July 2001 edition of the journal World Development. The article, “Microenterprise Lending to Female Entrepreneurs: Sacrificing Economic Growth for Poverty Alleviation?” deals with the question of gender differences in response to access to microcredit programs in developing countries.


Patty Yancey, director of the arts and education collaborative–school of education, has a chapter in the new edited volume, Inside Charter Schools: The Paradox of Radical Decentralization, edited by Bruce Fuller, PhD, Harvard University Press, 2001. Yancey’s chapter is titled, “We Hold to Our Kids, We Hold on Tight.” It is a case study of an all African-American charter school in Lansing, Mich.


Stephen Zunes, associate professor–politics, had his article on U.S. policy toward international terrorism published in the winter 2001 issue of Global Governance. His article on U.S. aid to Israel appeared in the most recent issue of Middle East Insight. Additionally, his book review of Robert S. Litwick’s Rogue States and U.S. Foreign Policy appeared in the January 2001 issue of Middle East Policy. Also, his analyses of the 10th anniversary of the Gulf War and the election of Ariel Sharon as prime minister of Israel were published as Policy Briefs by the Foreign Policy in Focus Project of the Institute for Policy Studies.
