Environmental Science Faculty Present Conference in China
Faculty in the Department of Environmental Science traveled to Xiamen, China, in January to present a conference in conjunction with the local Environmental Protection Bureau.
Managing the Environment, included sections on Environmental Monitoring, Water Quality, Pollution Control and Ecological Preservation, and Management of the Environment and Sustainable Development: Law, Assessing Risk, and Public Awareness.
Xiamen is a very clean city, a model city for environmental management, said department chair Robert Toia. They were eager to learn about other peoples experiences and problems concerning the environment.
Faculty presenters and the topics they discussed included: John Callaway on The Challenge of Restoring Functioning Ecosystems; Ted Daum on Environmental Monitoring: Sampling Strategies and Data Treatment; Jack Lendvay on Direct and Indirect Impacts of Land Use on Surface Water Quality; Tom MacDonald on Hazardous Waste Contamination: Problems and Perspectives; Daniel Reidy on Environmental Protection and the Law; Paolo Ricci on Quantitative Methods of Risk Assessment and Management Applied to Sustainable Development; and Robert Toia on Raising Public Awareness through Environmental Monitoring Programs.
