New Horizons
Publishing a university magazine is like arranging pieces of a puzzle. In this issue alone, you’ll find stories about the successful end of the USF’s most ambitious fundraising campaign, a nun who is empowering immigrant children through education, the university’s thriving and thoroughly unique architecture program, deans and vice presidents immersed in poverty in Nicaragua, a baseball star turned valedictorian, why plastic grocery bags should be outlawed, and students who view college years as a time to deepen their faith.
And in our USF expert guide to doing anything better, you’ll even learn a few new skills (some arguably more useful than others), including how to pair wine with food, how to save the planet, how to be a better date, and how to do a cool yo-yo trick. When each piece of the puzzle fits into place, a unified picture of a vibrant, innovative, creative, top-notch university community is revealed.
With this issue, we hope to present this picture to an even larger audience through a newly launched USF Magazine Web site.
When we began designing the site, our goal was to broaden the reach of this award-winning magazine while giving our regular readers an engaging, dynamic online counterpart to the publication. Going online allows us to offer more content and make the magazine available to a much wider audience. Besides all of the stories and features you find in the pages of the printed magazine, the new site includes online-only content such as slideshows of photos not used in the printed magazine, expanded features, full text of speeches, and tools to print and email stories, send letters to the editor, and contribute to classnotes.

On a personal note, this is my last issue as editor of USF Magazine before moving on to a new position in the USF School of Law. Thanks to all the readers and contributors who have helped to make the magazine the dynamic and engaging publication it is today. I look forward to seeing it continue to develop and tell the stories of the inspiring and important work of the University of San Francisco community.
