Configuring Eudora 5.1 for USFconnect E-mail: Mac Instructions

These instructions are specific to version 5.1 of Eudora. However, you should be able to configure version 4.0 and up with the same instructions. Just be aware there will be slight changes to how you find the same information noted below. If you find you are not able to configure your version of Eudora with these instructions, contact the ITS Help Desk at itshelp@usfca.edu or via phone at x6668. [ PC Eudora Instructions ]

Open Eudora.

Go to the Special menu and select Settings.

Step 1: Under the icon on the left called Getting Started set your options to the following (see image for details):

Username: username (i.e. emforest)

Mail Server: lucas.usfca.edu

Real Name: yes, your real name

SMTP Server: smtp.usfca.edu (Please note: your outgoing mail server is dependent on who provides your Internet access. If you are using someone other than USF, such as PacBell, Earthlink, etc., you will need to use their SMTP information. For example, PacBell users normally use mail.pacbell.net as their SMTP Server information.)

Return address: username@usfca.edu (i.e. emforest@usfca.edu)

Step 2: Under the icon for Checking Mail set your options to the following (see image for details):

Mail Protocol: select the radio button for IMAP

If you want to save your password, check the Save password box.

Check the box for Check for mail every --- minutes. Enter the number of minutes you would like Eudora to automatically check for new mail.

For laptop users and home computer users: If you are using a laptop or checking your e-mail from your home computer, under the section for Download Options you should select either Full message except attachments over --- K (a good size might be 250) or Full message with attachments. This will allow Eudora to download the full contents of the message to your laptop or home computer, allowing you to access those messages when you are not connected to the USF network. The option that allows you to set an attachment size enables you to control the downloading of large attachments. If the attachment is larger than the size you specify, then Eudora will not download the attachment to your computer until you attempt to access the attachment.

Step 3: Under the icon of Sending Mail, set the following options:

Default Domain: usfca.edu
This will allow you to simply enter a USF person's username when sending an e-mail message. Instead of having to type forest@usfca.edu, you can just type forest. Eudora will automatically add the rest when sending the message.

Make sure both Immediate send and Send on check are checked

Step 4: Under the icon of Attachments, be sure there is a folder entry for the Attachment Folder option.

To confirm or set an attachments folder, click on the button that appears just beside Attachment Folder. This will open the Choose a Folder window where you can select a folder. You can use the default option, as illustrated below, or you can create a new folder. When you have decided which folder to use, click the Choose button.

Step 5: Under the icon of Miscellaneous, set the following option:

Make sure Empy Trash on Quit is selected.
This is important to protect you from having your e-mail server storage space eaten up by trash that has never been emptied.

Click OK when you have adjusted your settings.

The first time you check the new account you should be prompted to enter your password. This password is your USF Network Password. It may not be the same password you have been using for the old e-mail. Note: if, when you enter your network password, you are prompted to use the System Keychain, say no. If you are unable to log in, call the ITS Help Desk at x6668 so someone can reset your password.

Once you start using Eudora for USFconnect E-mail:

Quirky thing for Mac Users: When you attempt to trash your e-mail for the first time, you will probably get a message saying you need to choose a mailbox:

When you get this message, simply go up to the Mailbox menu (without clicking anywhere else -- you want that Choose Mailbox message to still show on your screen), go down to the section for Dominant, and select either Deleted or Trash. You will be asked if you really want to use that folder as for deleted/trashed messages-- just say OK to that! Of course, you won't see all the stuff that shows up in this image, since this is Beth's computer, but you should see at least Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and either/both Deleted and Trash.
