Sacramental Preparation
Are You Interested in Catholicism?
All those interested in learning about how a person can become Catholic, and what it means to be a Catholic, are welcome to this year-long series of gatherings beginning in September.
You may already be sure that you desire to be a Catholic, or you may want to learn more about what that means. Either way, you are invited. This is a process which encourages participants to determine if this is something they feel called to do. Those who choose to continue throughout the year may join the Catholic church during the Easter season.
For those of you who do decide to join the Catholic community, it is very important to have participated in all the meetings during the school year. The year-long process of The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) offers an opportunity to learn about Catholic beliefs, Scripture, our traditions, our prayer and worship, and our history. More importantly, it is a time set aside to discern how the Lord invites the individual into a community of believers.
The RCIA group meets each Sunday following the 9:30am Mass at St. Ignatius Church. Interested individuals are asked to call Fr. Jim Blaettler, S.J. at 415.422.6639 or blaettler@usfca.edu for more information.
Please note that a preliminary interview is required. To set up an appointment, please contact Catherine Mifsud at 415.422.4463 or email her at cmmifsud@usfca.edu
Confirmation Preparation
Beginning in February and lasting through the month of April, University Ministry also offers preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This program is available for Catholics who consistently practice their faith, are knowledgeable about the Catholic tradition, and who only need a brief review of Catholic beliefs and teachings. These meetings are held weekly with others in formation for the Sacrament. They are part faith-sharing, part catechism. They are tailored to the needs of the individuals. No meetings are held over spring break. The best option for each individual is decided in conversation with the program coordinator.
The preparation concludes in the spring with a celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop is the minister of this Sacrament.
