Founded in 1855 as the first college in San Francisco, the University of San Francisco has grown with the City. Out of the windows of our classrooms and residence halls, you’ll see iconic structures like the Golden Gate Bridge and the glittery new buildings of downtown SF. Hop on a bus to North Beach, the former haunts of Beat poets. Walk a few blocks south and you’re in the bustling Financial District. San Francisco is a place filled with innovators and leaders, inspired and driven by the City’s vibrant history.
At USF, we strike the same balance between past and present. The values of our Jesuit Catholic founders still inform what we do today, through academic programs that pair thought and knowledge with action. Visionary faculty members provide students with the skills and real-life experience to tackle important global issues. The first Computer Science Department in the country was established here, and the city's first electric light shone from the top of Saint Ignatius Church on our campus — USF hasn't stopped leading the way since then.
