Mass excavation was completed over the University break.  The remaining dirt in the holding bay in the UC lot is slated to be used for infill at footings. Concrete pours are continuing this week, despite the weather with a wall pour scheduled for Monday, January 23rd at the G level.  The plaza elevator pit base and walls will be poured this week and next. This elevator is located in the northeast corner of Harney plaza close to UC.  All foundations for the building are scheduled to be complete in the next two weeks.  The next suspended slab pour is currently scheduled for February 8, 2012.

Mass excavation is continuing in the area between Harney and UC and should be complete within the next two weeks.  Drilling tie backs will begin today and continue through next week.  This may create more noise than usual but is intermittent based on where each tie back is located on the site. A concrete pour is scheduled for Friday, December 2 and off hauling will begin starting Monday with approximately 10-12 trucks per day circling through.   No weekend work is scheduled for the December 3 weekend.

Underpinning at Harney is continuing this week and should be complete by September 30th.  Tomorrow, Friday, September 23rd could be a very noisy day for Harney occupants as the workers chip away at the existing footing in various sections with a hoe ram.  This noisy work is expected to be completed by the end of the day Friday.  Monday will be a very big day as it is the first official large concrete pour, 470 yards of concrete will be poured.  Tuesday will continue with more concrete, pouring approximately 270 yards.  Today the iron workers are completing the doweling on the west portion of the site.  The week of October 3rd will be exciting as the project begins to go vertical.  Off haul wil also resume that week and is expected to be completed by mid to late October.

Underpinning at Harney is continuing this week and will continue through the next one to two weeks.  This will include very loud chipping noise due to the need to chip away at a portion of the concrete footing for Harney.  The first large concrete pour is set to occur on Thursday, September 22 in the southwest corner of the site.  The concrete pumps will be installed soon as they will be pouring the base for the concrete pump this week.  Limited excavation activities will continue and should be completed by the end of the month, though minor excavation for footings shall continue into mid October.

CSI Construction Update for week of 8.29.2011

Site Perimeter Air Monitoring Explanation

(Air Monitoring Explanation) Permanent link

In compliance with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) requirements, the CSI site perimeter has been monitored on a daily basis for each work shift since the demolition/earthwork began.   The air monitors are gathering real time data for PM-10 dust (10 micrometer dust particulates) and collecting Asbestos air samples (TEM Method for Asbestos Structures greater than 0.5 micron).  USF, has contracted with an independent Industrial Hygiene firm to perform the perimeter air monitoring on a daily basis in compliance with the Federal, State and Local requirements. Results for TEM and PM-10 samples are received by the University generally 24-36 hours after the samples are taken from the job site.

This information supplements the Daily Site Perimeter Air Monitoring findings reported .  The purpose of the perimeter air monitoring systems is to determine if the mitigation measures are performing as designed.  It is determined that the perimeter air monitoring system is performing in exactly the manner in which was intended.  To the extent the air monitoring system has disclosed results that exceed the prescribed action level, the following cause and results have been determined.  The elevated readings referred herein refer to TEM only and not PM-10 results.

At this time BAAQMD has not prescribed alternative action or required cessation of operations.  To the extent that results exceed the prescribed action levels on June 28 and July 6 they are due to ambient weather conditions and not operations.  To the extent additional mitigation is warranted during excavation activities, they will be implemented by the project.  With respect to the results reported for the July 12 this was likely caused by a contaminated truck entering the site.  As in the past, truck tires and under carriage are wetted down at the site to mitigate airborne particulate matter.

Results reported for July 14 and 15 are attributed to tieback drilling operations on the south side, extreme winds and inappropriate monitor location(s) too close to the work operation.  For the limited additional operations of the same or similar to this work, the operation will be modified and additionally controlled to eliminate elevated reading levels.

Tower Crane Delivery & Installation Confirmed

 Permanent link
A tower crane will be delivered to the site and erected over the weekend of August 15th and 16th.  The pathway in the center of campus will be closed during the delivery of the crane and materials.  Pedestrians will be directed to alternate pathways during the delivery.

Construction Update June 22, 2011

 Permanent link
The first phase of the cistern work in the UC lot is complete and the mobilization for the mass excavation has begun.  Demo of existing Harney Plaza began last week which included the demo of the stairs between Harney and UC on the 16th and 17th.  The demo of the concrete and landscaping is continuing through this week.  Mass excavation will begin in the southwest corner of the Harney Plaza Thursday, June 23rd.  With this will begin the multiple truck loads of off haul each day.  The relocation of the fire hydrant was completed last week and resulted in a wood ramp over the hose on the paver pathway between Gleeson and Harney Plaza to allow the contractor to still use the hydrant to keep the site wet during excavation.  The installation of fence lighting and speakers is occurring this week and will continue through out the week of June 27th.  The delivery and installation of the tower crane will be over a weekend in the month of July and is tentatively set for July 30th and 31st.

Construction Update June 9, 2011

 Permanent link

Cistern work is being completed this week with the asphalting of the UC lot on Friday.  Starting Friday, June 10th the Contractor will be drilling soldier beams, which will increase the noise levels in the plaza.  Demolition of the plaza concrete including the stairs between UC and Harney will begin Tuesday, June 14th.  Mass excavation of the plaza will follow the concrete demolition which will begin the increase numbers of dump trucks in and out of the UC lot.  Relocation of a fire hydrant next week will necessitate draining the fire sprinkler systems in Fromm and Gleeson, it will take one day and the buildings will remain occupied but will have Public Safety on fire watch.  This work will most likely be scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, this is dependent on the schedule for the city personnel who has to come on site for this work.

Construction Update May 27, 2011

 Permanent link

Construction is in full swing for the CSI building and the Plaza Relocation project.  In the area in front of the library, the Plaza Relocation, the fences are up and demo of the sod and campus walk is complete and grading will begin today.  The work in the UC parking lot for the cistern is continuing, the replacement of the asphalt is scheduled for the week of June 6th.  The demo of the existing Harney Plaza is scheduled to begin the week of June 6, starting with the demo of the concrete in the plaza and the stairs in between the UC and Harney.  Work will be fairly quiet today as it is a day off for the carpenters union.  No work will be performed over the three day weekend.  Trucking for the week of May 31st will be about 12 trucks per day.  Once the demo of Harney plaza begins the numbers of trucks per day will increase significantly.

Summer Construction Start, Monday, May 23, 2011

 Permanent link

It will be very busy with construction starting Monday, May 23rd.

Harney Plaza
The Contractor will begin fencing off the site and will be moving in equipment on Monday.  The demo of the concrete in the plaza will begin on Tuesday, this will be very noisy work.  This will start the process of the mass excavation to occur in the plaza over the summer.

New Plaza Relocation
As the Harney plaza will be off line for the next two years the University will be recreating event space on the lawn in front of Gleeson Library.  This work will begin on Monday with the installation of the chain link fence.  The fire lane that runs from the northwest edge of Kalmanovitz to the Fromm building will be closed off.  This work will be completed during the summer, but there will be alternate pedestrian paths during this work.  This work involves the removal of part of the lawn and the installation of pavers, additional lighting and other site improvements.
