SAN FRANCISCO (July 22, 2013) - The University of San Francisco's (USF) Sport Management program, in partnership with Leadership California, a statewide organization dedicated to advancing women in leadership roles, will host Women & Sports, a daylong conference exploring the world of sports and women's engagement in the industry, July 29.
Designed for members of Leadership California and graduate students in the USF Sport Management program, approximately 150 attendees are expected to participate. This second annual conference will include:
- Presentations by individuals who hold leadership positions in organizations including the San Francisco 49ers, the Pac-12, and Google/YouTube, on the opportunities and challenges they face.
- Findings from USF student research on the public perception of women athletes, and how participation in sports affects women's leadership styles. Nola Agha, assistant professor in USF's Sport Management Program, will present research findings.
- Panel discussions focused on technology, marketplace demographics pre and post Title IX, and personal success stories.
USF Vice Provost Mary Wardell-Ghirarduzzi, a Leadership California 2012 alumnus, worked with Pam Hemann, the executive director of Leadership California, to bring the conference to USF. "This year's conference theme of women in sports presented a terrific opportunity to link Leadership California with USF's topnotch Sport Management program," said Wardell-Ghirarduzzi. "We are delighted to provide support and academic research around leadership strategies in athletics."
