For the City & The World: Conversations in Catholic Studies and Social Thought helps mark 5th anniversary of Lane Center
SAN FRANCISCO—February 8, 2011-- The Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at the University of San Francisco (USF) is proud to announce the publication of their new book, “For the City and the World: Conversations in Catholic Studies and Social Thought” (Association of Jesuit University Presses). This work is a compilation of the most enlightening and thought provoking lectures that have been given through the Lane Center since its founding in 2005. Topics including feminism, genetics, patriotism, and consciousness are explored and presented by religious and lay persons alike.
“Over the past five years, we invited scholars to San Francisco to present on the many contemporary social issues that are sparking current cultural debate,” said Michael W. Duffy, Ed.D., director of the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought. “These scholars bring a wealth of experience, research, and contemplation, and speak on such issues through the lens of Catholic Social Thought. The broad range of subjects included in this volume evidences the diversity of conversations we explore.”
For the City & The World is a striking collection illustrating that Catholic Social Thought is alive and well in today’s global society. Duffy explained, “The aim of the Lane Center is to bring a vibrant, relevant, thinking Church to the world, and to bring a dynamic, exciting, diverse and ever changing world to the Church. The intersection of the Church and the world is what we hope this volume will illustrate.”
University Provost Jennifer Turpin expressed her excitement for the work saying, “We owe much to Joan and Ralph Lane -- not only for their generous support, but also for their vision and dedication to the Catholic intellectual tradition.” Turpin continued, “The Lane Center is able to continue Joan and Ralph’s goal of teaching and inspiring others to think and act for the common good. This impressive collection is a true manifestation of that vision.”
