Teaching Service-Learning

If you are interested in teaching service-learning at USF, the McCarthy Center offers consultations and workshops.

Staff members are available to meet with professors regarding their service-learning course development, planning, implementation, and debriefing. We provide assistance with identification of potential community collaborators, partnership dynamics, syllabus construction, and pedagogical components such as reflection and assessment. Contact the Associate Director for Community Based Learning, Star Moore, to set up a consultation.

Professors can learn more about service-learning and develop a service-learning syllabus in our Faculty Service-Learning Seminar. Once faculty have created a service-learning syllabus, they must submit it to the curriculum review board for approval.

Learning Outcomes of Service-Learning

By completing the service-learning graduation requirement, USF students will

  • Discover how to apply and extend what is learned in the classroom while addressing the needs and issues of the community agency that hosts the service learning experience
  • Analyze their own beliefs, values, assumptions and identities while learning about the beliefs, voices and values of others
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the responsibility that all citizens share to be ethically engaged in furthering the welfare of their communities
  • Demonstrate the ability to properly identify a community?s demographic characteristics, socio-cultural dynamics, needs and strengths
  • Reflect on the personal and academic impact of their experiences with a community or agency
  • Demonstrate learning from multiple sources of knowledge and an appreciation for the reciprocity between scholarly knowledge and community action
  • Think critically and act compassionately as they promote social justice
