ARCD 312 - Environmental Controls Systems (2)

This lecture course introduces students to energy and environmental issues as they relate to the built environment and the materials used to construct buildings. An overview of the basic principles of energy flow and energy use will be provided, as well as the fundamental climatic patterns and variables that have significant impact on building performance and occupant comfort. Passive building designs will be covered for each of the major global climate zones and students will be exposed to the underlying complexity of developing architectural solutions that address a wide range of local and global environmental concerns. Students will study the cultural and technological factors that have driven advances in efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The applicability of passive architecture, especially vernacular forms, as a means of furthering social justice and energy independence of occupants, will be emphasized in the course. Prerequisites: Physics 110 or 130 AND Mathematics 107 or 109.
