Portuguese

Brazil is not only the largest Portuguese speaking country with more than 200 million inhabitants; it’s also South America’s most influential country and an emerging global economic power.

That rising power has resulted in a variety of professional opportunities for individuals with a working knowledge of the language. The Portuguese curriculum at the University of San Francisco prepares students for this environment by emphasizing the development of communication skills. The following Portuguese classes fulfill the USF foreign language requirement:

Portuguese 101 - First Semester Portuguese (4)

The first of a two-semester sequence designed specifically for students with no previous Portuguese. Activities and tests are designed to accommodate the early stages of language acquisition; grammatical structures and lexical items presented accordingly. This course emphasizes the development of communication skills: the ability to comprehend native speakers of Portuguese, to speak Portuguese with them, to understand Portuguese- language texts, and to communicate ideas in Portuguese. This course includes a mandatory one-hour weekly group conversation class with a tutor for nine weeks of the semester outside of the class meeting time. Note: All incoming students enrolling in a Portuguese class at USF for the first time who have taken Portuguese before and/or were raised speaking Portuguese are required to take the placement text. Offered in the fall.

Portuguese 102 - Second Semester Portuguese (4)

The second of a two-semester sequence designed specifically for students with no previous Portuguese. Activities and tests are designed to accommodate the early stages of language acquisition; grammatical structures and lexical items presented accordingly. This course emphasizes the development of communication skills: the ability to comprehend native speakers of Portuguese, to speak Portuguese with them, to understand Portuguese - language texts, and to communicate ideas in Portuguese. This course includes a mandatory one-hour weekly group conversation class with a tutor for nine weeks of the semester outside of the class meeting time. Note: All incoming students enrolling in a Portuguese class at USF for the first time who have taken Portuguese before and/or were raised speaking Portuguese are required to take the placement test. Portuguese 201 – Third Semester Portuguese (4)

Students continue to develop reading, speaking and writing skills, and expand their active vocabulary. The class is conducted in Portuguese, with activities designed to practice and consolidate all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultural readings are assigned to expand vocabulary, stimulate discussion, and broaden students' understanding of the Hispanic world.
