Zander Urban was a Seattle native and an exemplary student at the University of San Francisco. He graduated from USF with honors in International Studies on Friday, May 20, 2011. During the early hours of May 25, Zander was struck by a car while crossing a San Francisco street. He passed away the following day. Zander is survived by his sister Marianna, and his parents, Will and Laura Urban, of Seattle.
A dynamic and engaging student, Zander made the most of every opportunity he encountered. He spent the summer of 2010 in the California State Capitol as a USF McCarthy Fellow. The fellowship, awarded through the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, offers outstanding students the opportunity to intern with legislative and executive offices for 12 weeks in Sacramento. Because of his deep interest in international affairs, Zander accepted an assignment in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, where he helped to plan Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s trade mission to Asia. Zander’s initiative and thorough work resulted in the Governor’s inviting him to join the trip as a member of the California delegation, an invitation he reluctantly declined due to his academic commitments at USF. He accepted, instead, a part-time position on the Governor’s staff through the remainder of the Schwarzenegger Administration while balancing a demanding academic schedule and active social life in San Francisco.
Zander was an outstanding young man with unlimited potential who touched the lives of those around him. With a zest for life and wide-ranging interests, Zander aspired to a career of public service and inspired others with his wit, intelligence, and commitment to justice. He learned Arabic and studied the Middle East, hoping that someday he would employ his skills to reduce conflict in the world. A talented musician and an avid skateboarder, he found great joy in the hills of San Francisco. He is missed deeply by his family and friends.
The University of San Francisco has established an endowed fund in Zander’s name to ensure that generations of USF students are able to follow Zander’s path to public service. The fund is designed to support student participation in McCarthy Center internship programs in Sacramento, CA, and Washington, D.C.
