The USF Visiting Student Program provides applicants from San Francisco to São Paulo with an opportunity to attend undergraduate or graduate classes without being formally admitted.
Visiting students may take up to eight semester credits (two classes) to enrich their education, improve academic standing or satisfy prerequisites for graduate school. Completed coursework, however, may not count toward a USF degree without formal acceptance to the University. Reapplication is required each enrollment period.
Here's how to become a visiting student:
1. Check Our Application Dates and Deadlines
The Undergraduate Deadlines page lists the date ranges during which visiting students can apply online or in person.
2. Search for Classes
Visit the One Stop Schedule of Classes page. Click “Search for Courses Here.” Select “Term” from the drop-down menu and submit. Choose the subject and click “Class Search.” Enrollment limits and restrictions or prerequisites can be viewed by clicking on the class title.
Undergraduate courses (000-499):
Approval from the department is not required. However, if a course has prerequisites or restrictions, contact the department to request an override.
Graduate courses (500-799):
Please contact the appropriate Graduate Program Director to obtain permission to take a graduate level course.
3. Apply as a Visiting Student
Apply Now. You will receive an admission decision by email or mail after submitting an application. If accepted, your login information will be included within that notification.
International Visiting Students
Click here to check if your United States visa type is eligible for study. USF cannot issue I-20 forms to visiting students, but F-1 students currently in the U.S. are eligible to be a visiting student at USF, as long as they continue to maintain their full-time F-1 status at another school. All non-immigrant visa holders should complete the Visiting International Student Request Form in addition to their application to verify their ability to study.
4. Register for Classes
Visiting students who wish to enroll in undergraduate classes may register online through USFconnect or in person at the One Stop Office (Lone Mountain Room 251). If you apply in person you will be able to register online 24 hours after submitting your application. Learn how to register online.
5. Pay for Classes
USF accepts various methods of payment or will set you up with a payment plan. Payment can also be made in person at the One Stop Office. If you register for class after the payment due date, you must be prepared to pay the balance due at the time of registration. USF does not accept credit cards. Credit Toward a USF Degree
If visiting students apply to USF degree programs after they have taken classes as visiting students, formal permission must be obtained from the dean or director of the degree program to which the student applies before credits obtained as visiting students will be applied toward a USF degree.
