HESA Internships

 Graduate Internships offer opportunities for students in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Master's Program at USF with invaluable work experience and an ability to contribute to the mission and goals of the institution. Positions are 9-10 months in duration and require that students work an average of 20-25 hours/week in an assigned department. Experience can be gained in a variety of settings including student housing, cultural centers, student activities, leadership and orientation, student conduct, university ministry, and more.

Internship Process Timeline
Students who are admitted to the HESA program for the 2015-16 academic year are eligible to apply for these internships. The internship placement timeline is as follows:

  • January 7: Deadline to apply to School of Education for admission to program
  • February 2: All admitted students will receive a direct notification and be invited to apply for Graduate Internships. (Note: Please do not contact departments directly.)
  • February 9: Graduate Internship Application Deadline 
  • February 17-23: Phone Interviews
  • March 12 (12:00-5:00pm) and March 13 (9:00am-5:00pm): HESA Preview Days and On-Campus Interviews
    •  An EXAMPLE Preview Day schedule can be found here
  • March 26-April 15: Internship offers made 
  • Upon receiving offer, students will have three business days to accept
  • April 15: Admission deposit deadline to confirm participation in program

Academic Integrity Committee

Department: Office of Student Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities (OSCRR)

The Graduate Intern will contribute to short-term and long-term goals of increasing visibility and participation on the Academic Integrity Committee. The Intern will promote the concepts associated with academic integrity and conduct broad outreach to faculty, staff, and students. The Intern will create a comprehensive marketing campaign regarding academic integrity and facilitate educational programs across campus, as well as support the meetings and activities of the committee.

Full Position Description

America Reads 

Department: Learning and Writing Center (LWC)

The America Reads Graduate Intern works closely with the faculty and staff of the USF Learning & Writing Center to oversee undergraduate tutors who provide literacy tutoring to local elementary schools and after-school programs. The Graduate Intern is responsible for maintaining an extensive database of tutor information, hiring, training and supervising America Reads tutors, keeping in regular contact with America Reads sites, instructors, and communicating daily with participating tutors.

Assessment in Student Life 

Department: Division of Student Life

Oversee the coordination and development of assessment protocols and learning outcomes with the various departments and centers of the Division of Student Life. Collaborate with various departments and centers to assist in the creation of assessment tools and programs that address various concerns, issues, and trends during the academic year.

Full Position Description

Assistant Residence Director 

Department: Student Housing and Residential Education (SHaRE)

The Assistant Residence Director (ARD) is a ten-month live-in graduate assistantship position. The Assistant Residence Director is responsible for assisting the Residence Director (RD) in the planning, implementation, operation, and evaluation of a comprehensive community and student development program for a residential community of between 200-500 students.  The Assistant Residence Director also supervises the overall residence hall front desk operation and assists in the supervision of between 4 and 16 Resident Advisors.

Career Services 

Department: Career Services Center (CSC)

The Career Services Graduate Intern will support a range of career development/planning related events and activities. The Intern is responsible for assisting with program marketing, volunteer recruitment, supervising student assistants, and outreach/publicity in collaboration with CSC staff and colleagues across the University, while gaining exposure to the operation of an administrative unit within student affairs.

Under the supervision of the Director of Cultural Centers, the intern is responsible for promoting the educational and programmatic initiatives of the Intercultural Center and Gender and Sexuality Center while gaining exposure to the operation of this administrative unit within student affairs. Particular focus will include partnership initiatives with the various academic and student affairs areas.

Department: Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Provost, the Graduate Intern will support a range of diversity and inclusion events, activities, and initiatives. The Intern is responsible for promoting the educational and programmatic initiatives of the Office in collaboration with diversity office staff and colleagues across the University, while gaining exposure to the operation of an administrative unit within the provost's office.

Emergency Medical Response Program 

Department: Student Life

The EMR Program Intern will assist in the creation of a student EMR Program at the University of San Francisco. The USF Emergency Medical Response (USFEMR) Program collaborates with the San Francisco Paramedic Association to train undergraduate students to serve as Emergency Medical Technicians specifically for USF’s San Francisco campus. The EMT Program Intern will support staff in recruiting and training student leaders, marketing the program to the USF community, programming, and assessment.

Family and Youth in Transition

Department: Learning and Writing Center (LWC)

The FYIT program at the University of San Francisco provides academic tutoring in all subjects to students in San Francisco Unified School District. The Graduate Intern works closely with SFUSF and oversees undergraduate and graduate tutors who provide tutoring services to homeless (transitional) students at San Francisco elementary schools. The Graduate Intern maintains an extensive database of tutor information, keeps in contact with FYIT contacts, visits tutoring sites on a regular basis and communicates daily with participating tutors.

Reporting to the Director of Communication and Outreach the Graduate Intern will contribute to short-term and long-term goals of increasing enrollment and visibility for all SOE graduate programs and the school at large. The Intern will use his/her experience to help SOE implement programs and manage events for prospective students. Specifically, the Intern will assist with the SOE Ambassador Program, the School of Education Open Houses, Information Meetings, Yield events and grad fairs. Additionally the Intern will contribute content to social media, regularly posting to Facebook, twitter and Linked In and tracking results with the aim to increase audience members and participation.

Resident Minister 

Department: University Ministry (UM)

The Resident Minister (RM) engages USF students, especially those living in residential communities, to explore principles of Ignatian Spirituality and apply these principles to their life and work. The RM must be available to students for up to 15 hours each week and is expected to attend University Ministry programs, liturgies and events, facilitate hall programs, and be attentive to any student needs that may arise.

Retreats Coordinator

The Graduate Internship for Student Retreats is a ten-month position in the office of University Ministry to lead the student retreat program (undergraduate and graduate), communities of reflection (CORe groups) and the student confirmation preparation program. The Graduate Intern for Student Retreats will work as a member of the University Ministry team, attend weekly staff meetings, and lead a team of resident ministers and part-time student staff to successfully execute student retreats according to the highest professional and ministerial standards.
