Dr. Barry Posner

Dr. Barry Posner, Accolti Professor of Leadership at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University and co-author of the best-selling book The Leadership Challenge, gave a lecture presentation at the USF School of Education on best leadership practices, November 17, 2012. His book, which has sold over two million copies, was named one of the top one hundred business books of all time and book-of-the-year by the American Council of Health Care Executives.

The event was well attended by graduate students in the Organization and Leadership (O&L) program and USF faculty. School of Education faculty member, Dr. Patricia Mitchell gave the opening remarks followed by an introduction of Dr. Posner by O&L graduate student, Mark Guitierrez, president of the USF chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

Dr. Posner’s informative presentation, both humorous and moving, addressed the five practices of exemplary leadership and the direct impact the practices have in the work place. He shared inspirational stories of leadership and challenge, including a personal story, remarking that love is the key element that sustains a leader over time. He advised students, “If the heart is not right, nothing else really matters.”

The presentation was followed by a brief question and answer period and a book raffle for which Dr. Posner graciously donated several of his books. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to get their books signed and to meet and interact with Dr. Posner. This was a truly inspiring event with one of the great minds and scholars of our time on the topic of leadership.
