Accounting
Accounting is the language of business. An in-depth knowledge of accounting helps individuals understand what is happening inside a business. A solid background in accounting is essential for successful careers in the business world.
Students with a major in accounting are well prepared for a variety of careers in public accounting, private industry and government. USF accounting majors are actively recruited by all major CPA firms, large San Francisco Bay Area industrial organizations and governmental agencies.
Program Objectives
All McLaren College of Business students take a full year of accounting, Principles of Accounting I and Principles of Accounting II. These courses are normally taken in the student's Sophomore year.
Students concentrating in accounting should take the following courses in their Junior year: Intermediate Accounting I and Intermediate Accounting II. These courses help students develop a comprehensive understanding of accounting theory and practice, and financial reporting. They are the foundation of the Accounting major's program of study at USF. In their Senior year, all students declaring an accounting major take Contemporary Accounting Topics (Senior Topic Course).
In addition to the required courses, students with an accounting major select additional accounting course electives. These advanced courses, usually taken in the Senior year, allow students to develop additional knowledge and understanding in a specialized area.
Students planning for a career in public accounting can select courses which will help them prepare for the Uniform CPA (Certified Public Accounting) exam. The McLaren College of Business assists students preparing for the CPA exam by providing computer-based self-study programs. Students planning for a career in private industry can select other courses which will be more directly related to their career interests, as well as help them prepare for the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) and CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) exams.
Students concentrating in accounting in the McLaren College of Business pursue different career paths. Three of the most common paths are Public Accounting-Audit, Public Accounting-Tax, and Private Industry.
