Eugene Muscat, interviewed on KGO-TV about the effect that increased gas prices is having on consumer buying habits. Muscat sees a significant increase in online purchases by consumers trying to avoid the cost of driving and parking. This is especially true now that many online retailers are offering free shipping.

DECEMBER 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was quoted in the Dec. 2 issue of The Oakland Tribune, about Mervyn's attempted turnaround and their focus on the Latino community.

Muscat appeared on KGO-TV Dec. 21, saying that even though gift card predictions have been high this holiday season, they will be exceeded.

Muscat was a guest on KGO-TV Dec. 23, commenting on credit card issues, and again on Dec. 26
discussing gift cards and after Christmas shopping.

NOVEMBER 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, appeared on KGO-TV Nov. 1 discussing oil prices and the impact on the economy.

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was included in the East Bay Business Times Nov. 2 article about the closing of Bombay Company stores. Muscat said that besides slumping home sales decreasing the need to buy home merchandise, all kinds of retailers with a primarily brick-and-mortar presence are increasingly having sales siphoned away by Internet and catalog sales.

Muscat, School of Business and Management, participated in a KALW radio interview that aired on Oct. 1 about consumerism and why consumption is important.

Muscat, School of Business and Management, was quoted in the Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune Oct. 12 and 13, commenting on Draeger's grocery store opening in Danville’s Blackhawk Plaza. Muscat remarked that professional people in that area are willing to pay a bit more for the convenience Draeger’s offers.

SEPTEMBER 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, appeared on KGO-TV September 11 commenting on Mayor Gavin Newsom’s announcement of asking hundreds of city workers to submit letters of resignation. Muscat remarked that if that happened in a business it would cause chaos and uncertainty.

AUGUST 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, appeared on KGO-TV August 14 commenting on the Mattel toy recall and its economic impact on the industry.

Muscat again appeared on KGO-TV August 20 discussing Novato-based Greenpoint Mortgage closing its doors for good.

JULY 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was quoted in the Contra Costa Times July 1, speaking about the increase in gourmet grocery stores and the retail landscape in Lafayette, California.  Muscat was again quoted in the Contra Costa Times July 20 about Safeway’s push to turn their stores into “lifestyle centers” complete with dining options such as gelato bars, coffee roasters and sit-down sushi bars. On July 24, Muscat’s comments were included in a La Opinion article about Wal-Mart’s aggressive pricing. Muscat is also quoted in the July/August issue of The Costco Connection commenting on the importance of putting job descriptions in writing.

JANUARY 2007

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was interviewed by KGO-TV Jan. 1, discussing the increase in the minimum wage, and how it helps reduce employee turnover. The interview aired on the 6 p.m. news, and then again the following morning. On Jan. 19, Muscat appeared on KGO-TV to comment on the economy, and the cost of public universities increasing.

2006 Selected Media Appearences

DECEMBER 2006

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was quoted in a Dec. 2 San Jose Mercury News story about charitable giving. Muscat remarked that charitable giving is more sophisticated today: “Now it's become more stealth, subtle and hip.”

Muscat was also quoted throughout a La Opinion story about Tower Records filing for bankruptcy Dec. 5. Muscat commented on how music outlets need to keep up with the times and understand that online offerings are hard to beat. La Opinion looked to Muscat again on December 20, to comment on the company’s upcoming IPO.

He also did a string of retail-related broadcast stories during the holiday shopping season, appearing on KGO-TV Dec. 19 and 24 discussing the increase in online sales, retailers woes, and “last chance” Saturday.

Muscat is quoted throughout a Dec. 31 Oakland Tribune story about retailers specializing in niche markets. He is also featured in the Contra Costa Times about family-owned businesses. The story also ran in the Oakland Tribune. 

NOVEMBER 2006

Arkansas Democrat Gazette Nov. 10 discussing Wal-Mart’s choice to say “Christmas” instead of “holidays” in their branding.

Muscat was quoted again in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette about the hot toys of the holiday retail season. He said that there is a certain amount of nostalgia surrounding Hot Wheels, Legos and Monopoly, and will stay popular this season.

Muscat appeared on KGO-TV Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 discussing his predictions for “Black Friday” and the holiday shopping season. He also appeared on KTVU-TV on Friday, Nov. 24 from San Francisco’s Union Square talking about retail trends during the holidays.

MAY 2006

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, was quoted in the Barre Montpelier Times Argus (Barre, Vt.) May 30, The State (N.C.) May 28, and the San Jose Mercury News May 13 about high-tech presents for mothers and college graduates.

APRIL 2006

Eugene Muscat, School of Business and Management, spoke to the San Jose Mercury News April 23 about the financial performance of the restaurant chain Max’s. His research on family businesses was mentioned in an Indianapolis Star article April 24.

MARCH 2006
