Regional Development and Social Impact:
Multi-faceted Encounters between China and the West in the Late Imperial
and the Republic Era (1840-1950)
Description: Chinese-Western encounters in selected regions, exploring
and comparing the social impact of commercial, diplomatic and missionary
activities in relation to education, medicine, social change, women,
trade, etc. (Part 7 of the series, New Century,

Description: The project focuses on the study
of cultural and historical interactions between China and the West
in Chinese ethnic minority and border areas. Research papers include
such topics as diplomacy, trade, missionary activities, minority language
studies and preservation, encounters of Christian and Muslim religions,
etc. (Part 6 of the series, New

Christianity and Culture: Japan and China in Comparison (1543–1644)
Description: The project consists of an
international symposium and a publication of the conference proceedings.
The project is co-sponsored by the Macau Ricci Institute, China, and
the Jesuit Historical Institute, Italy. Research papers discuss such
issues as diplomacy, trade, literature and art, and language in late
Ming China and Warring States / early Tokugawa Japan (ca. 1543–1644).

Handbook on Christianity in China: Volume II
Description:
This is a reference book on the history of Christianity in China from
1800 and 1950. It includes bibliographies of primary and secondary sources
in Chinese and western languages for different historical eras, and consists
of essays on historical backgrounds, major religious and secular groups
and individuals, theological debates, effects of political events, religious
and cultural interactions between China and Christianity during this
period.

Oral History in Chinese-Western Cultural Encounters
Description: Examination of various oral history techniques and research
methodology in English and Chinese. The project will develop a Chinese
language multi-disciplinary textbook to be used in the Chinese

Description: Resource development project that will produce

the late Ming to early Republic eras, documenting activities of

History of the Chinese Rites Controversy (2005-2010)
Description: Through a new sinological research approach, this project
will attempt to captures the religious, historical, and cultural essence
