This
publication, co-edited by Father Edward
J. Malatesta, S.J., founding director of
the Ricci Institute, and Gao Zhiyu, a professor
from the Beijing Administrative College,
documents carefully the four hundred years
of history about the first Christian cemetery
in Beijing. First known as the Portuguese
cemetery, and then as Zhalan (Shala), the
cemetery was provided as a burial ground
by the Chinese emperor Wanli in 1611 for
Matteo Ricci, and later, many other missionaries
who followed Ricci in the imperial service
or dedicated more intensely to direct pastoral
ministry of various kinds.
Included
in the book are numerous photos and charts
that illustrate the above history, and the
reproduction of the rubbings of sixty-three
tombstones that can still be found at the
cemetery today.
