This
new publication is edited by the First Historical
Archives of China and published by Zhonghua
Shuju (China Book Company) in Beijing.
All documents are related to Western Catholic
missionary activities from the early to mid
Qing dynasty in China. Documents selected
for this publication are in Chinese and are
preserved in the First Historical Archives
of China. Most of them are from the archives
of the Grant Secretariat, the Grand Council,
the Secrete Palace memorial collection and
the Imperial Household Department, and most
have never before been included in published
collections.
The publication includes four volumes, and
is divided into two parts. The first part
consists of three volumes, illustrating activities
of the Western Catholic missions in different
places in China. The second part consists
of one volume. All of the materials in this
volume are from the record book of work orders
in the Workshop Section of the Imperial Household
Department. The contents mainly reflect the
tasks and services the Western missionaries
rendered in the Qing court during the Yongzheng
and Qianlong reigns.
Documents in both parts of this publication
are arranged chronologically according to
reigns. For cross-reference, at the end of
the publication there are indices of Chinese
names, Western names, place names, names of
officials, and names of gardens and palaces.
