Ricci Asian Scholars Endowment

This special endowment was established through an anonymous bequest in honor of Rev. Edward J. Malatesta, S.J., founding director of the Ricci Institute. The funds are to be used in support of the education and scholarly activities of students-scholars of Asian descent to promote cross-cultural exchanges and friendship between China and the West. Fellowship or scholarship support based on merit for outstanding graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in degree programs at the University of San Francisco.

Some of the activities supported by this special endowment include scholarship in support of graduate studies at the Master of Arts in Asia Pacific Studies (MAPS) at the USF Center for the Pacific Rim and Chinese Christian Studies Project.

Ms. Ahn Jung Won is a native of Korea and a doctoral candidate at the University of Tokyo in Japan. Funded by the Ricci Asian Endowment, she visited USF as a research fellow at the Ricci Institute in the summer of 2005. While at the Institute, she developed her research on comparative studies of women and marriage in Catholic communities in sixteenth and seventeenth century China, Japan, and Korea. A Jesuit's Views on Chinese Marriage: Manuel Dias, S.J. (1559-1639), is an English excerpt from Shigaku 7:2 (June 2003) written by Ahn.
