QUARTERLY FEATURE
Emperor Yongzheng 雍正
Empress Xiaoxian 孝賢

In January 2005, Dr. Frank Hill donated two late 18th century reverse-image paintings to the Ricci Institute.

The technique of painting reverse-images on glass (sometimes called back-glass painting) was introduced to China by the Jesuit Giuseppe Castiglione (郎世寧, 1688-1766). It was soon adopted by Chinese artisans who created objects for the booming export art trade based in Canton. Imperial portraits were popular export items, such as these of the Emperor Yongzheng 雍正 (reigned 1723-1735) and the Empress Xiaoxian 孝賢.
