Collaboration with Chinese Scholars |
|
With the growing interest in religious studies in higher education and research institutions in China, the Ricci Institute recently sponsored two seminars in China. In October 2004, the Ricci Institute brought together young Chinese scholars in the field with the intended goal of encouraging curriculum development, teaching, and original research in Sino-Western cultural exchange.

In a two day conference at Fudan University in Shanghai (October 16-17, 2004) eight Chinese scholars in their early thirties met with the goal of expanding the connections that already link them in a common commitment to the development of religious studies in mainland China. In this first meeting of this kind, participants focused on: (1) strengthening personal ties of friendship and support, and (2) exploring future possibilities for closer professional collaboration. Led by Drs. James and Evelyn Whitehead, Distinguished Fellows of the Ricci Institute, the participants shared with each other their current teaching responsibilities, research, and more importantly, their “dreams” for the future. Closer collaboration among this lively and energetic group is expected in the years to come.

| In addition, The Ricci Institute co-sponsored a seminar in collaboration with the East-West Cultural Exchanges Research Center at the Central China Normal University, entitled “From Confrontation to Integration: Chinese Christians and the Rise of the Indigenous Church in China” (Oct. 23-24, 2004). The seminar drew seventeen papers from Chinese scholars in China focusing on the experiences of Chinese Christians in China, their contribution to the social and educational development of modern China, and the relationship between the Christian religion and traditional Chinese religions. A collection of conference papers will be published later in 2005. The seminar is part of the three-year new initiative by the Ricci Institute to promote the study of the Chinese-Western cultural history by Chinese scholars. This initiative is supported by a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation in New York. |
