Rev. Alden J. Stevenson, S.J. (1915-2003) was known at the University of San Francisco for his appreciation of China, her people, and culture. He studied Mandarin at Yale University, and taught English in Taiwan and Shanghai. From 1972 through the 1990s he made numerous visits to China, often bringing students and faculty and developing scholarly exchanges. He was well known for his humor, insightful photography, and global vision for a more just and loving world. He recognized early that China’s youth would emerge as leaders in technology, culture, and world affairs. His legacy is preserved in his photographs and in a memorial scholarship for deserving USF students from China.

In October 2003, some Asian and American friends of Fr. Alden Stevenson inaugurated a perpetual scholarship fund in his memory. The Stevenson scholarship was established to assist young students at USF from China who come from backgrounds of financial need. The award criteria are:

1. citizen and resident of China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, including any national minority;
2. expressed desire to give back in some way to one’s country or to Asia when studies are completed; and
3. full-time undergraduate matriculation maintaining 3.0 GPA. This fund is now endowed and is growing, but needs the help of new contributors.
