INTRODUCTIONi_title

The Stations of the Cross depict fourteen scenes in the final days of Jesus's life, from his trial before the Roman official through his death and burial. Portrayed in a variety of artistic styles, these scenes adorn Catholic churches and shrines throughout the world.

Since the Middle Ages, Christians have expressed religious faith and found spiritual consolation in „making the stations.‰ This practice˜sometimes a communal service led by the priest but often a private devotion˜takes the form of a brief pilgrimage, with a moment of prayerful reflection spent before each of the pictures before moving on to the next. This contemplation on the sufferings of Jesus remains one of the most cherished devotions of Catholic piety, particularly during the Lenten season that precedes Easter Sunday.

Chinese artist MA Li draws on the text of a traditional Chinese prayer book, as backdrop for her contemporary interpretation of the fourteen Stations of the Cross.
