Editorial Comments: FrontLine created the Excel Solver Add-In that is packaged with every copy of Microsoft Excel. Their products are a natural progression from the basic Excel Solver. They can handle larger models, have various enhancements, and come with extensive documentation. They now ship a Solver for Lotus 1-2-3.

 What's Best!

Contact:  LINDO Systems

Chicago IL 60622
(800) 441-BEST(2378) or (312) 988-7422

Author/Publisher Statement: Lets you build linear, nonlinear, and integer models in Excel. Models are easy to build and understand using standard spreadsheet equations. Excel users can often begin building models within minutes of installing the What'sBest! program, and the problem capacities of the larger What'sBest! versions allow large scale, real world problems to be solved.

Editorial Comments: The original spreadsheet solver. Less visible since not bundled in with Excel, and there is less textbook support than for the Excel Solver. There are versions for a variety of problem sizes, including very large problems. Limited capacity versions (150 constraints and 300 variables) can be downloaded. Instructors can contact them for desk copies of the student version (250 constraints and 500 variables for $25).

Solver Table

Author:  Chris Albright

Publisher: Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

Author/Publisher Statement:  This Excel add-in, available as a free download from the above link, works much like an Excel data table. It allows a user to vary any single input, or any pair of inputs, in a Solver optimization model and capture any selected outputs from the corresponding optimization runs.

Simulation/Meta-Heuristic Add-Ins

Meta-heuristic optimization embedded in a simulation package. (Or a simulation package embedded in a meta-heuristic optimizer, you decide.)  These products use a meta-heuristic to change decision variable values between simulation runs, automating a heretofore manual search process.

PrecisionTree

Contact:  Palisade Corporation
31 Decker Rd.
Newfield, New York, USA 14867

Author/Publisher Statement: PrecisionTree allows you to create decision trees and influence diagrams directly in Excel. PrecisionTree allows users to organize decisions efficiently while considering all possible options and analyzing all available information. Influence diagrams are used to show relationships between events on a general scale, and decision trees (with decision, chance, logic and risk nodes) outline the numerical details of a decision. There is no limit to the size of a tree that can be defined, and trees can span multiple worksheets or multiple workbooks. After an analysis, PrecisionTree creates an easy-to-understand report right in your current workbook that details the best decision to make and the risk associated with that decision. PrecisionTree can also be used with @RISK to perform thorough risk analyses on decision trees. (Standard and Professional versions)
