Public Safety Officer
(Non-Sworn)
The Department of Public Safety provides a variety of law
enforcement and related services as well as ongoing programs in disaster, crime
and fire prevention on and around the 55-acre hilltop on campus. Officers patrol
campus 24 hours a day on foot, in marked vehicles and on mountain bikes. An
on-campus radio communication system links all Regular, Reserve, Community Service
and Student Officers with the Department's dispatch center.
Professionalism in public service is the criterion under
which this Department operates.
Job Description
Public Safety Officers possess Peace Office Powers of Arrest
under authority of Section 830.7 of the California Penal Code. They are responsible
for continuous patrol of the University campus, initial response to all campus
emergencies (including medical and criminal), and the enforcement of University
rules, regulations and applicable criminal laws on campus. Officers enforce
the California Vehicle Code on campus, arrest offenders and provide a variety
of service functions. Public Safety Officers are required to work any shift
in a 24 hour day, including holidays.
Reserve Public Safety Officers are responsible for the above
duties, but their primary functions is to provide security at special functions
on campus such as: dances, athletic events, receptions, special presentations,
etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Education High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of
one year of college with a minimum GPA of 2.0. (Technical school, military duty
or job related experience may be substituted).
Training Successful completion of training pursuant to Section
832 PC Module A (Reserve Academy) or Basic POST academy prior to appointment.
Academy completion date must be within three years of application date. Current
Consumer Affairs "Guard Registration," "Straight Baton Certification,"
and successful completion of firearm training by date of appointment.
Visual Acuity: Uncorrected vision of 20/30 in both eyes or corrected
vision of 20/20. Normal depth perception and color vision in both eyes.
Strength and Agility: Possess sufficient strength and agility
necessary to perform the duties of a Public Safety Officer (including running,
jumping, climbing obstacles and stairs, carrying heavy objects, etc.)
License: Possess and maintain valid California Driver's License
with a good driving record.
Psychological Exam: Pass a written and oral psychological evaluation
prior to appointment.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of four parts:
Part I: Application screening
Part II: Interview to evaluate candidate's education, training,
experience and
personal fitness for the position.
Part III: Candidates who successfully pass Parts I and II will
be invited to an
interview with the Director of Public Safety and, upon his discretion, be forwarded
to Part IV.
Part IV: Candidates who are forwarded to this stage will proceed to
a screening process which may consist of the following:
- Review of DMV driving record;
- Review of work history through previous employers;
- Review of character references; and
- Review of credit and financial history.
Candidates who successfully complete all phases may be hired
to fill vacancies as they arise. The probationary period for new hires is one
year.
