The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to elect the Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., as the University's 28th president. An accomplished scholar and professor, an adept, seasoned administrator and an ideal fit for the university. He has a strong commitment to diversity, brings a global perspective, and is an enthusiastic supporter of intercollegiate athletics. He is a Bay Area native and is excited about leading San Francisco’s first university and expanding our partnerships with the community. The board looks forward to welcoming Fr. Fitzgerald to USF in the fall. At the same time, we are deeply grateful to the Rev. Stephen A. Privett, S.J. for his inspired, dynamic and collaborative leadership these last 14 years.

The Presidential Search Committee was united in finding the very best leader for the university and, after discussions with more than 300 contacts, unanimously recommended Fr. Fitzgerald. First and foremost, we know he will sustain and advance the university’s Jesuit mission and identity. He also brings impressive experience in connecting with the business community, in fundraising, and in strategic planning. He has a sound working knowledge of the mechanics of higher education and the use of technology to complement the transformative one-on-one interaction between faculty and students. My deepest thanks go to the members of Presidential Search Committee for their sustained dedication, collaborative spirit, and commitment to the university.

As Chair of the Search Advisory Committee, I am deeply grateful to my fellow Committee members and to the hundreds of participants in the Listening Sessions and online survey. The high level of involvement in this process enabled the Presidential Search Committee to be very clear on the qualifications needed to lead USF. We look forward to continuing this engagement when we introduce Fr. Paul to the USF community.
