RAYMOND DENNEHY, Professor, is a first generation American, born and raised in San Francisco. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy as a radarman aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Rochester, in the Pacific, he attended the University of San Francisco, getting a B.A. in philosophy; he then did graduate studies in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, going on to get his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto. Among his teachers were Karl Popper, C.B. Mcpherson, and Anton Pegis. Dennehy began his teaching career at the University of Santa Clara in 1966 and has been teaching at University of San Francisco since 1974. Besides authoring REASON AND DIGNITY and editing CHRISTIAN MARRIED LOVE, he has published many scholarly articles. He has also just published ,Anti-Abortionist at Large: How to Argue Intelligently about Abortion and Live to Tell About It and is currently working on another book, POSSIBILITY AND REALITYAn Introduction to Practical Metaphysics. Over the years, he has frequently been a guest on television and radio as well as on university campuses and before community and professional groups to discuss ethical issues. November 9th of this year will mark his 23rd semester debating abortion at the University of California, Berkeley, before a class of 700 students. Dennehy is one of the founders of the St.Ignatius Institute, a Catholic great books program at the University of San Francisco, and delivered its innaugural address in 1976"The Mission of the Catholic University in the Contemporary World." Metaphysics and epistemology are his areas of specialization, but almost all his speaking invitations have to do with topics in bioethics. The courses he regularly teaches are Metaphysics, Epistemology, Problems in Democacy, Contemporary Thomism, and Abortion & Euthanasia. Dennehy holds memberships in the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, National Association of Scholars, American Catholic Philosophical Assoication, the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, and the American Maritain Association. A former president of the American Maritain Assoication, he has also served on the executive committees of the ACPA and Fellowship. He is listed in WHO'S WHO IN THE WEST and CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS. |
