The Major and Minor:
| The major begins by introducing students to
significant philosophical issues, in Great Philosophical Questions, and to the art of
thinking critically about them, in Logic. |
| The Sophomore and Junior years continue an
in-depth study of philosophical ideas and key figures in the Ancient, Medieval, and Modern
periods, culminating in a semester dedicated to the seminal figure of Immanuel Kant. At
the same time, students continue an in-depth study of fundamental subjects of philosophy
(e.g. the Human Person and Metaphysics or Epistemology). A special section of Ethics for
majors amd minors is taken in the Senior year. |
| The major is designed to give considerable
flexibility to students, so that they may pursue their own interests; it includes 4
electives, 2 of which must be non-GEC courses. Most of the elective offerings are in
contemporary (i;e. 20th c.) philosophy: for example, phenomenology, analytic philosophy,
feminism, critics of modernity, post-modern critics, contemporary thomism, American
pragmatism, philosophy of history, philosophy of action, or philosophy of emotion.
Students may also study Asian Philosophy, offered regularly. |
