Kahane and Tidman, Logic and Philosophy: A Modern Introduction, 8th ed. Wadworth
Logic Coach III, version 1.5.9
COURSE OBJECTIVES
We will study some formal methods of constructing and evaluating arguments and also write and re-write a series of short papers on classical philosophical arguments. We will study some of the best and worst arguments in history and practice develo ping arguments ourselves.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
There will be 4 short quizzes 10% each, the lowest score of which will be dropped, 4 short writing assignments with rewrites, each of which will count 10%, and a final examination that will count 20% of the final grade. Homework will be collected regularly and count 10%.
EXAM DATE
Final Exam Thursday, 12/14/00 3:30 pm (the same as all TR 11:10-12:25 classes).
MAKE UP WORK
If you miss one quiz, it will be counted as your lowest quiz score and will be dropped. If you miss more than one quiz or if you fail to turn in your paper on time, each one missed will count as a zero. If a missed quiz or paper is excused, it may be made up. Serious illness, a family emergency, or student activities which are official and cannot be avoided are the only excuses that will be accepted for missing a quiz or turning in papers or homework late. Excused absences can only amount to one third of class work; if you miss more, you will be required to withdraw.
ATTENDANCE
You are expected to attend class regularly. You are responsible for all the material that is covered in class, for turning in your homework and writing assignments on time, and for taking quizzes at the scheduled time.
FIRST ASSIGNMENT
