Department of Philosophy

The philosophy major offers students an excellent grounding in the fundamental subjects, key movements, and central figures in the history of philosophy in a program of study that emphasizes the development of superior reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

Philosophy reflects on basic questions concerning the nature of human persons, the existence of God, and the criteria for judging an action to be ethical.

Philosophy develops problem solving , analytical, and synthesizing faculties unrestricted in their scope and unlimited in their usefulness. It prepares students for graduate study in philosophy, law, and other fields, and citizens for positions of leadership, responsibility, and innovation .

Graduates in philosophy teach, practice law, make policy, and manage enterprises; they work in public relations and as analysts and writers.

Philosophy provides one with a personal compass; as Socrates said, it makes life worth living.
