In 1989, Carmen Silva joined USF as the Administrative Assistant to the VP for Student Affairs. From 1990 to 2003, she served as Assistant to the Provost, helping coordinate and administer the Jesuit Foundation grant awards process from its beginnings in 2000. In 2004, Carmen was appointed as Assistant Director for USF’s first Office of Sponsored Projects. She has presented, with OSP Director Pam Miller, to national research administration conferences on “Starting a Sponsored Projects Office from Scratch” and “Going It Alone.” Carmen is a member of CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research), NCURA (National Council of University Research Administrators) and the Northern California Wagner Society. She came to USF from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where she helped administer offices and laboratories for Leon Silver, the geochemist who trained the Apollo astronauts in geology so that they would know what rocks to collect on the moon’s surface; and served as an Administrative Assistant for Edward Stone’s Space Radiation Lab which received millions of dollars annually in federal grants. Carmen was one of the few people to see the first photos of Uranus as Dr. Stone was also chief P.I. of the Voyager I & II programs. She holds a BA in English Literature from USF and studied one year in the Graduate English Literature program at San Francisco State University. Carmen is interested in literature (English, Russian, and Latin American), writing, opera, classical music, classical ballet, film, and photography. |
