California University on Track to Cut Power Consumption 20-25%
New Initiatives To Help

(San Francisco) In order to deal with California's on-going energy crisis, the University of San Francisco has cut power consumption 15% from the same period one year ago and is introducing new initiatives that may reduce consumption even more.

"We are confident we can cut consumption by 20 percent," said Glenn Loomis, assistant vice president of plant services and facilities management. "Our hope is that by fall, we'll be conserving closer to 25 percent over last year's totals."

The University has been using solar panels since 1982, when it installed three different systems that now provide half the hot water needed in student residence halls. New energy-saving measures include:

Adding fuel cells. Fuel cells turn natural gas into heat and electricity with virtually no pollution and no noise. Each can produce 200kw of electricity, enough to power a typical University building. They also create hot water which will be used for hot water needs and heating.

Replacing hundreds of incandescent light bulbs at individual desks with screw-in fluorescent bulbs.

Sponsoring an energy saving contest in the residence halls. Winning halls will have money donated in their name to help pay the electric bills of indigent citizens.

E-mailing frequent reminders to faculty and staff on the need to conserve.

It's not just power that the University is trying to conserve," Loomis said. " The University of San Francisco is also taking steps to conserve water and increase the amount of paper we recycle. We've installed hundreds of low-flow toilets in buildings across campus, and we're installing collection containers in central locations to encourage even more recycling."end
