imageLoyola Village to be Opened to Students

(April 4, 2002 | San Francisco)—The University of San Francisco Board of Trustees has voted on a plan that will virtually eliminate the university’s student housing crunch. The Board has decided to convert Loyola Village from a housing project occupied primarily by USF faculty and staff into a housing complex open primarily for USF students. The 136-unit apartment complex is scheduled to open this summer for graduate, married and upper division students.

The Board made the decision after faculty and staff demonstrated lower than expected interest in buying or renting units. Demand for housing has softened considerably in San Francisco in the past year. Rental prices in particular have shown a marked decrease, making off-campus apartments that were unavailable or unaffordable suddenly an option.

Faculty and staff will still have the option of renting in the complex, but no units will be sold.

The lack of on-campus student housing has been one of the major complaint from USF students. Since the conception of Loyola Village in 1995, demand for on-campus housing has almost doubled. The University is now renting or leasing space around the city, and in the Presidio, trying to meet the heavy demand.

Room assignments at Loyola Village will be determined by lottery.
