The University enrolled 843 freshmen as of Aug. 25, the largest freshman class on record. Its the second record-breaking class in a row, and a 100% increase from a decade ago. Total new traditional undergraduate student enrollment as of Aug. 25th, including transfer students, is 1,208, which is 76 students more than last year. The number of applications to the University increased. Overall applications for fall 2001 was 6% higher than fall 2000 and the number of freshman applications was up 8% (3,838 vs. 3,557). USFs student population remains the most ethnically diverse of the countrys 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. San Francisco Archbishop William Levada is the keynote speaker at the inaugural address of the Saint Ignatius Institute and Catholic Studies Program. University employees and friends are invited to attend at McLaren Complex, Tues., Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. (see related story) USF graduate Alejandro Toledo (B.A. economics, 1971) was elected president of Peru in June. University Board of Trustees has re-elected Dominic Tarantino as chairman
and Maureen Clark as vice chair. Charlie Cross was named Vice President, Business and Finance effective June 5th. The executive offices of the College of Professional Studies have moved into their new home. The completely refurbished building at the corner of Turk and Masonic has 22,000 square feet of space. The College of Professional Studies has established an International Institute of Criminal Justice Leadership. Former San Francisco Police Chief Anthony Ribera is the director From 1996-2000, the pre-professional health committee successfully placed 56% of applicants into medical schools. That compares to the national average of only 38%.
