Vol. 1 | Issue 3 • October, 2000      [  back to main ]   archives ]

Fr. Stephen Privett began duties as the University’s 27th president Sept. 15th.

U.S. News & World Report has moved USF into its 2nd tier of "Best National Universities." USF is grouped with those rankings 51 through 115. (Only the top 50 universities are assigned a specific ranking.) The university’s national reputation is indeed improving, but USF is reluctant to rely heavily on these ratings because of concerns about methodology, which changes every year.

U.S. News ranked the University as one of the top 10 most diverse universities in the nation. Among new students, approximately 50% are students of color, 10% are international and 40% are white.

The class of new students is the largest on record with 1,145. It’s the second record-breaking year in a row. Total university enrollment stands at 8,230.

The Fox Cable News Network and Fox affiliates featured USF in a story broadcast nationwide September 22nd. It examined the university’s record-breaking enrollment and why students choose to attend universities with a religious affiliation.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu Tum will visit the University Oct. 23-24, as part of University Ministry’s annual justice lecture series. Mrs. Menchu was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1992 for promoting the rights of indigenous people in Guatemala.

The percentage of USF students accepted to medical school sets a new university record. 67% of USF students were accepted, compared to 42% accepted nationwide.

Volunteers from the USF School of Law were named "Hometown Heroes" by San Francisco’s CBS affiliate KPIX. Students and faculty were singled out for their volunteer work in the Tenderloin and the Mission districts.
