USF’s Team EvoShield is honored on the Giant’s Scoreboard

A team of USF Business students in Professor Monika Hudson’s class won the Undergraduate Elevator Pitch competition with a proposed protective head shield for baseball pitchers, which will be manufactured by an existing company called “EvoShield.”  They’ve received legal advice from Professor Dave Scalise about trademarking the proposed name of their new product.

Their idea came after one of their own team members, Matthew Hiserman — a pitcher on USF’s baseball team — was hit in the head by a baseball in February of this year.  At first, doctors feared that the injury was severe enough to keep Matt from ever walking again.  In fact, Matt is now fine, and returned to his Elevator Pitch team with the idea that lead them to a win in the Elevator Pitch Competition.

Three undergraduate Business Planning classes — totaling about 120 students — participated in the competition.  The Planning class is one of two capstone courses for undergrad business students.

Leilani Gayles, HR Director for the San Francisco Giants, is a USF alumna who graduated with an HR specialty from our Professional Studies Program.  She was an invited guest speaker in Professor Hudson’s class earlier in the semester.  When Team EvoShield won the Elevator Pitch competition, Professor Hudson advised Leilani, who generously offered her box seats for a Giants’ home game and arranged to have Team EvoShield honored on the main scoreboard.
