Prolific Scholar Of Social Justice And Diversity Joins Faculty

02-03-2011
Richard Johnson

Professor Richard Johnson.

Dean Mike Duffy has announced a new faculty member.

Colleagues:

It is truly a pleasure to announce that Richard Greggory Johnson III will join USF as a tenured associate professor of Public Administration (in the Department of Organization, Leadership and Society) in August 2011.  Richard is a leader in thinking and teaching about social justice particularly in government and higher education workplaces.  His work spans broad areas and, in fact, he is advancing our understanding of organizations, leadership and society.  He will be a great addition to the department that has all three of those words in its name.  Thanks to Dave Scalise, Larry Brewster and Catherine Horiuchi for their hard work and focus which resulted in this outstanding addition to our faculty.

When we think of what USF aspires to, we often refer to USF 2028 which spells out five attributes that will characterize our university for the coming decades: academic rigor, Jesuit Catholic, diverse, global and integration with the City of San Francisco.  Richard will advance our School's commitment in each of these areas.

 Richard Johnson's Book
Professor Johnson’s most recent book will be published in August, 2011.

During the dozen years Richard has served at the University of Vermont, where he is currently a tenured associate professor, he has authored, co-authored or co-edited four books, nine journal articles, five book chapters; he has made 26 research paper presentations at US and international conferences, given 10 invited lectures; and oversaw 14 doctoral dissertations.  That list catalogs productivity, but Richard's scholarly activity is not only about meeting the rigorous standards of the academic arena; his scholarship also deepens our understanding of diversity -- diversity broadly understood to include race, gender, sexual orientation and social class. In particular, Richard analyzes data and attitudes to shed light on current practices which either limit or open opportunities for many people in the United States.  His 2010 book Women of Color in Leadership: Taking Their Rightful Place and his forthcoming book Cultural Competency and Human Resource Management in the Public Sector, are but two of his many contributions to the field.  Over a number of years his scholarly activity has especially added to our knowledge and awareness of social justice issues in the workplace for African American gay men, transgender people, and gays and lesbians.  This semester he is deepening his understanding of non-US cultures with a Fulbright Fellowship in Hong Kong, a particularly good place to prepare for his coming to USF.  The search committee stated, "We believe his research agenda is an excellent fit with USF's mission and values."

Richard earned a bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC; master's degrees from DePaul (public service management) and Georgetown (Public and Social Policy) and a doctorate in Public Policy and Administration from Golden Gate University.    His teaching includes specialization in public sector human resource management and development; leadership in higher education; as well as diversity and social justice.  A graduate course for students in Education and Public administration titled "Leadership for Diversity, Social Justice and Democracy" typifies his broad reach across programs designed to prepare 21st century professionals and leaders.

While Richard is in Hong Kong this semester, you may join me in welcoming him to USF via email:  richard.johnson-III@uvm.edu
